Batman 3 is a GO!!!

It's official!

Director Chris Nolan has confirmed that the third installment in his revival of the Batman films in the beginning stages of development, and could be released as early as 2011!!

However, no casting details have been confirmed, and it is still unknown if Christian Bale will be back as the caped crusader.

Rumors circulate that the villain in this installment will be the Riddler and that Johnny Depp is heavily favored to be cast in the role, if his commitment to "Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides" does not conflict.

Other favorites to be the Riddler are Jude Law, Evan Magregor or James McAvoy among others.

Other rumors abound that Amy Adams or Rachel Evan Wood will be cast as Bruce Wayne's love interest.

But remember, all of this is NOT confirmed! It's all rumors at this point!

"Benjamin Button" , "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Dark Knight" top the Academy Award nominations

No surprises here. Golden Globes favorites "Button" and "Millionaire" are two of the movies nominated for Best Picture of the Year at the 81st. Academy Awards nominations.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The high-profile Brad Pitt drama "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and the low-budget Indian saga "Slumdog Millionaire" led the field of Oscar contenders on Thursday, while Heath Ledger became only the sixth actor to get a posthumous nomination.

"Benjamin Button," for which Pitt earned a nod as best actor for playing a man who ages backward, had 13 nominations in all -- one short of the record shared by "All About Eve" (1959) and "Titanic" (1997).

"Slumdog Millionaire," the tale of an impoverished orphan's improbable victory on India's version of the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," followed with 10 nominations.

As expected, Ledger was nominated for his supporting role as the villainous Joker in the hit Batman movie "The Dark Knight," which collected eight nominations to tie with the gay-rights story "Milk."

Ledger is easily the favorite to take the prize at the 81st annual Academy Awards on February 22. The Australian actor died of an accidental overdose of prescription pills exactly a year ago, at the age of 28.

To date, the only performer to win posthumously has been Peter Finch, who was honored for 1976's "Network" about two months after his fatal heart attack.

"Benjamin Button," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Milk" will vie for best picture alongside a pair of movies that claimed five nominations each -- post-Holocaust love story "The Reader" and the political-media drama "Frost/Nixon." In a rare match-up, all five also got best director nominations.

Wolverine to host the Oscars?

Yup! This sounds like a desperation move to me.

After last year's disappointing performance by John Stewart, that resulted in the lowest ratings ever for the telecast, the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences have asked Hugh Jackman, actor, singer and dancer, best known for his roles in the X-Men series as Wolverine, to host the 81st Academy Awards in Hollywood on Feb. 22nd of next year.

The Academy says that a "new look and a new direction is needed".

In other words, the have fallen behind in the times!

The couldn't capture the younger audience they want!

They say, and I quote, "There will be more emphasis in dance and song this time."

Get ready to see crappy Oscars next year!

I don't dislike Hugh Jackman as a host, he has been a great host at the Tony Awards for theater, and will give some glamour back at the ceremony that was lacking in the last few years. But if the Academy wanted a new direction, why don't they try this method...

Tropic Thunder is still thundering at the box office!

The surprise is not that Tropic Thunder is #1, is that "The Dark Knight" went from 4 to 3 in a comeback! Can it become #1 in the all time list?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Action film parody "Tropic Thunder" held onto the top spot at the North American box office for a third straight week as the summer moviegoing season drew to a close, Hollywood studios reported on Sunday.

Paramount Pictures' farcical combat movie within a comedy, starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, sold an estimated $11.5 million in U.S. and Canadian tickets Friday through Sunday to bring its three-week tally to $83.8 million.

Its biggest competition came from a real action flick, the sci-fi thriller "Babylon A.D." from 20th Century Fox starring Vin Diesel, which grossed an estimated $9.7 million in its first weekend to land at No. 2.

Blockbuster Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" climbed a notch up the box office chart to No. 3 with weekend receipts of nearly $8.8 million, pushing its cumulative domestic haul past the $500 million mark in its seventh week of release.

"Dark Knight," a Warner Bros, release, stands as the second-highest-grossing domestic film of all time, behind "Titanic."

The U.S. Labor Day holiday on Monday marks the official conclusion to Hollywood's 18-week summer film season, which is expected to end with roughly $4 billion in domestic box office receipts overall.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Big-screen Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. scored his second No. 1 movie of the summer on Sunday as Hollywood spoof "Tropic Thunder" ended the month-long reign of "The Dark Knight" atop the North American box office.

"Tropic Thunder," a farcical combat movie within a comedy that also stars Ben Stiller and Jack Black, grossed $26 million during its first weekend in U.S. and Canadian theaters, bringing its five-day estimated total from Wednesday's opening to $37 million.

Downey who appears in the film in blackface, portraying a white actor playing a black action hero, also starred in the summer's first chart-topping movie, Marvel Studios' "Iron Man."

The superhero drama, which like "Tropic Thunder" was distributed by Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures, grossed nearly $99 million its opening weekend in May.

In "Tropic Thunder," Downey, Stiller and Black star as self-absorbed Hollywood actors caught up in a real-life battle with narco-terrorists while filming a war movie in Southeast Asia. The film was directed, co-written and co-produced by Stiller.

The blockbuster Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" slipped to No. 2 with $16.8 million in ticket sales in its fifth weekend of release but broke yet another commercial barrier along the way by becoming the second-highest-grossing film ever, according to box office tracking service Media By Numbers.

"The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale as Batman and the late Heath Ledger as the villainous Joker in his last completed role, has now amassed more than $471 million in domestic ticket sales. That tally ranks second only to the $601 million grossed by all-time champion "Titanic."

Adjusted for inflation, though, the 1997 blockbuster stands at No. 6 in the record books, far behind "Gone with the Wind" at $1.4 billion in today's dollars, according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo.

The Batman sequel surpassed the original "Star Wars" movie -- $461 million -- as No. 2 on the all-time box office list on Saturday. Distributor Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, has said it expects "Dark Knight" to end up with about $520 million in domestic receipts.

The last movie to remain at No. 1 for four straight weekends was "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," in 2003-2004, Box Office Mojo said.

The latest addition to the "Star Wars" franchise, a newly animated tale called "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," opened at No. 3 this weekend with an estimated $15.5 million in North American ticket sales. The film is designed in part as a launch pad for a new TV series of the same name coming to the Cartoon Network.

The weekend's only other wide release, an American remake of the South Korean horror film "Mirrors," starring Kiefer Sutherland of the hit TV series "24," grossed $11.1 million to land at No. 4.

Last week's runner-up at the box office, the stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," fell to No. 5 with $10 million, a drop-off of nearly 60 percent from its opening tally.

Woody Allen's latest offering, the well-reviewed romantic comedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, opened in just under 700 theaters nationwide to gross $3.7 million and round out this weekend's top 10.

Domestic box office receipts overall this weekend stood at $126 million, down 3 percent from the same weekend a year ago.

And the box office champion this week is...

The Batman sequel earned an estimated $26 million during the three days beginning on Friday, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said, taking its total to $441.5 million after 24 days.

It now ranks at No. 3 on the all-time list, behind "Titanic" with $601 million and "Star Wars" with $461 million.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it expects "Dark Knight" to end up with about $520 million.

The weekend's No. 2 slot went to the new Columbia Pictures release "Pineapple Express" with $22.4 million.

The stoner comedy undoubtedly would have been No. 1 had the unit of Sony Corp not opted to open the picture two days earlier than usual on Wednesday to maximize sales during the school holidays. The five-day total for the Seth Rogen film stands at $40.5 million.

Another Wednesday opener was "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," which came in at No. 4 with $10.8 million for the weekend. The Warner Bros drama has a five-day haul of $19.7 million.

Freeman is a hospital free man!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar winner Morgan Freeman said he was feeling "real good" on Thursday after his release from a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital where he was treated for broken bones and other injuries from a weekend car crash.

Freeman, 71, lost control of the car he was driving late on Sunday night near a home he keeps in Charleston, Mississippi, and was airlifted to the trauma center of the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, about 100 miles away.

"I left the hospital today, just after 12 noon, Memphis time," the co-star of the blockbuster Batman movie "The Dark Knight" said in a brief statement.

"I'm doing very well. I feel real good."

He concluded by thanking hospital staff and well-wishers, saying, "It's great to know people care about you."

Freeman's publicist, Donna Lee, said on Monday the actor suffered a broken arm and elbow and "minor shoulder damage" but was expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery.

The celebrity news TV show "Entertainment Tonight" reported on its website that Freeman underwent surgery on Monday to reconnect nerves and repair damage to his left arm and hand.

A passenger and owner of the car Freeman was driving, a female friend identified as Demaris Meyer, was also injured, but no information has been released regarding her condition.

Lee said Freeman and his wife of 24 years are in the midst of a divorce and had been estranged for some time.

Police ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash and said it was possible Freeman had fallen asleep at the wheel when the car careened off the highway and rolled over several times.

No other vehicle was involved and no citation was issued in connection with the accident.

Freeman won an Oscar in 2005 for his supporting role in Clint Eastwood's boxing drama "Million Dollar Baby." He also earned Oscar nominations for his work in the films "Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Shawshank Redemption."

Morgan Freeman injured in car crash!

Morgan Freeman, the esteemed actor that plays "Lucius Fox" on the hit movie "The Dark Knight" was injured in a car crash on Sunday. Here's the story.

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - Oscar-winning U.S. actor Morgan Freeman was hospitalized on Monday with a broken arm and other injuries after the car he was driving careened off a highway and rolled several times, authorities said.

Freeman, 71, lost control of the car late on Sunday near a home he keeps in Charleston, Mississippi. He was airlifted to a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital, 100 miles away.

"The vehicle went off the edge of the road and flipped several times," Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Williams said. No other car was involved in the accident.

A spokeswoman at Regional Medical Center in Memphis said Freeman was in serious condition but gave no details.

Freeman's publicist, Donna Lee, said later that the actor's injuries included a broken arm, a broken elbow and "minor shoulder damage."

She said he would undergo surgery later Monday or on Tuesday, but was in good spirits. "He says he'll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery," Lee said.

Rescue workers had to pry Freeman from the crumpled vehicle using hydraulic tools, but the actor appeared coherent as he was tended to beside the ambulance, said Clay McFerrin, editor of The Charleston Sun-Sentinel newspaper, who arrived on the scene shortly after the crash.

When Freeman, lying prone on a backboard, noticed onlookers taking pictures with cell phones, McFerrin said he heard the actor joke, "No freebies, no freebies."

Williams said it was possible that Freeman, who stars in the blockbuster Batman movie "The Dark Knight," had fallen asleep at the wheel. He said authorities had ruled out alcohol as a factor in the wreck and no citation was issued.

Both Freeman and a female passenger, identified as Demaris Meyer, were wearing seat belts, but air bags did not deploy in the automobile registered to her, Williams said. He said he did not know the extent of Meyer's injuries.

Lee described Meyer and Freeman as friends but had no information about her condition. Nor did the hospital.

Attorney Bill Luckett, who co-owns a restaurant and blues club with Freeman in Clarksdale, Mississippi, told CNN the actor was "in good spirits, but he's in a lot of pain."

Freeman was born in Memphis but spent much of his childhood in Mississippi.

Freeman won an Oscar in 2005 for his supporting role in Clint Eastwood's boxing drama "Million Dollar Baby." He also earned Oscar nominations for his work in the films "Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Shawshank Redemption."

Batman kicks Mummy's butt!

This weekend tally is in! "The Dark Knight" is the number one movie in America and Canada for the third week in a row! This means that probably it's on its way to become the second biggest grossing film of all time, behind "Titanic".

"The Dark Knight" got 43.8 million dollars this weekend, upping up the tally to 389.56 million dollars. It's estimated that the film will arrive at the 400 million mark by next Thursday. The second film this weekend was "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" with a respectable 42.5 million dollars. The film suffered from bad reviews and repeat business from people who wanted to see "Dark Knight" again.

The disappointment of the weekend was "Swing Vote", starring Kevin Costner, in which he plays a hard drinking oaf that becomes the deciding vote in the US presidential elections. It only garnered 6.4 million dollars and the number 6 spot.

"Stepbrothers" and "Mamma Mia" rounded up the top 4.

More on Christian Bale's legal woes.

It looks that the "Dark Knight" was ticked off when his mommy trash talked about his wife. Here is more of the story as reported by a friend of Bale's to Reuters...

"Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife."

"Christian's attitude is that this was his mother's fault because she became very provocative in an argument they were having,’" the source said, adding: "Things got out of control and he now says he wishes he just left the room."

"Normally Christian would just call a friend and go out to a pub to cool off. But he was literally trapped into this confrontation with his mother and sister because there was an army of fans and paparazzi outside."

"They're going to need a "cooling off" period because his mother said some pretty outrageous things to him that really set him off."

"He regrets the way she treated him in their argument a lot more than having to talk to police about it. Christian has admitted that something just snapped, but he didn't threaten anyone with violence."

Bale is reportedly having marital problems as well.

The report goes on to say:

"He can have a terrible temper. Instead of lashing out at his wife, he sometimes lashes out at people around him."

"He's under a lot of pressure right now and simply got incredibly loud with members of his family around. I think his wife is going to be very important to him after all this is over because she does, at the end of the day, know how to calm him down."

He is also said to have become depressed over the death of close friend and co-star Heath Ledger. The two actors formed a friendship when they both played Bob Dylan in the flick I’m Not There.

The source said, "Without Ledger around, he's found it more and more difficult to communicate with those around him, especially his family."

Another Bale insider confirms that Ledger's death was a massive blow for the Welshman:

"They had become very close during the making of The Dark Knight and Christian went into virtual hiding for the six weeks after Heath was found dead."

"He wasn't returning phone calls and he wasn't a happy man. It's foolish to think that he's been able to completely shake off that grief just as Heath and his work is finally being seen by audiences."

"He expected to share this moment with his friend, and now he can't."

It was also reported that Bale found it hard to shake off the mental strains of Batman, and told an interviewer he was having trouble sleeping.

Maybe Bale is having the same kinds of problems Heath had while making the film.

Early estimates from box office tallies across the US, say that on it's preview day, The Dark Knight, the new Batman story, directed by Christopher Nolan, broke records by collecting 18.5 million dollars in a single day, 66.7 Millon dollars by Friday. If this keeps up, it might break the record established by "Spiderman 3" in a single weekend.
